Maxine (one of our "Gray Muzzle Sweethearts")

"Hello potential forever homes.

My name is Maxine; I’m a very sweet, loving 10+ dog.My first home must have abandoned me, because I was picked up by the pound. No one ever came to claim me, which left me very sad and stressed in the kennels.

A Greater Victoria Animals' Crusaders (www.animalcrusaders.ca) foster family came and welcomed me to their home. They were very shocked that anyone would give me up. I'm told I’m a very wonderful girl and a real sweet heart.
I’m very good with older children and other dogs but I would prefer a cat-less home. I love people and enjoy when you shower your love and attention on me

. The vet gave me a thorough going over and I do have arthritis so I need someone to keep me on a good food full of glucosamine. Some extra vitamins with glucosamine would be great too. Other than that I’m very healthy for my age. I still enjoy my short walks in the neighborhood.

Please consider me to be part of your family. I promise to give you all the love I can give and in return all I ask is that you love me back. I need the comfort of a warm home and gentle touch. Just look into my eyes... you know you will love me." Maxine is a Greater Victoria Animals Crusaders dog.

Storm
Bio by trainer Geoff Cooke.
Breed: German Shepherd (pure bred with papers) Age:  5 yrs  Weight:  95 lbs. Sex:  male (neutered) Health:  very good (never needed the services of a vet except for vaccinations)  Vaccinations:  up to date (records available)Tattooed and ID chipped -- Pedigree name: Poseidon

Get to the phone ASAP for this lad – he won’t stay unadopted for long.  Not often does a dog as beautiful and without issues as this guy come along.  He will take you by storm with his playfulness, affection and loyalty.  He is used to running 10K and only needs a half hour’s rest only to want to go at it again.  He is, however, content to rest quietly at home.

Unfortunately, due to a busy lifestyle and the addition of new baby with extra needs, Storm's family need to rehome him.

Storm has nice house manners: he knows that the his bathroom is outside, that food on the counters is not for him and that the inside furnishings are not to be digested or chewed.

I was told that he walks on a ‘halty’ but when I tested him with just a leash and collar it only took ten minutes until he was walking without pulling -- right at my side. His obedience is fair but it wouldn’t take much effort to bring him up to a very good standard as he is very biddable.

Storm is exceptionally good with people (young and old) and very easy going with strangers.  He likes dogs and loves to chase cats but it is believed that he wouldn’t do any damage if he caught up to one.

Because he tends to want to explore, a home that is fenced would keep him safe.  Storm should go to an active family with children.  He has always lived with children and I am sure he would soon miss their energy.  As always with a new dog: show leadership.  Exercise, discipline and affection will keep you and him happy.

Storm is a Victoria Adoptables dog.

Mario
Mario is a six year old neutered male Shih Tzu mix who has a wonderful temperament. He has lots of energy for walks and play time, but he also enjoys snuggling up on the couch to watch a good movie. He is quiet, happy and laid back. He rides nicely in the car and gets along well with the other dogs and cats in his foster home.

Mario would prefer a home where someone has lots of time to spend with him because, frankly, he deserves it! He would also like a securely fenced yard where he can run and play safely. Mario is not the least bit aggressive, but he can be mouthy at times, in that he often communicates with his mouth by gently grabbing your hand to get your attention or communicate his needs. For this reason, we would prefer not to place him in a home with young children.

Mario has food allergies which result in skin break-outs and ear infections if he doesn't stick to his special diet. He is currently thriving on a raw food diet and his coat is now lush and full. He also takes an inexpensive medication that is a combination antihistamine/anti-inflammatory, which he takes every three days.

Mario is being fostered in Port Coquitlam. For more information about Mario or to request an adoption application form, please e-mail [email protected]

Mario is a Furever After Rescue dog.

Pepper
Bio by Trainer Geoff Cooke
Pepper Shepherd cross 1 ½ years Female (spayed) 55 pounds, health good, vaccinations up to date.

This little girl’s name suits her perfectly. Pepper has energy to burn and with her cute little crooked nose she wins everyone’s heart. Because of a fracture when she was a young pup, Pepper spent a long time in foster care and at the shelter. She is now being fostered with Geoff Cooke, a professional dog trainer, so is learning her manners with his 3 Border Collies. Pepper is young and needs some work on obedience, but she is walking on a leash without pulling now and her sits and downs are coming along nicely. Pepper is learning to share food and toys with the other dogs around her, and is a very clever, quick student.

Out on the trails, Pepper stays right with the pack and plays exuberantly with any and all comers. Her recall is good – she loves to come back to her people and is winningly affectionate.

Pepper would be fine as an only dog, but really enjoys the company of a canine companion. We would like to see her go to someone with strong leadership skills to help Pepper continue the progress she has made with her foster family.

Pepper’s adoption fee includes 3 mandatory lessons with Last Chance Dog Services. Pepper is a Last Chance Dog Services dog.

Cassie

Cassie Giant Schnauzer/Bouvier X Female, unspayed, 8 months old, 50 pounds

This little cutie has it all. Looks, charm and smarts. “Cass” is a bouncy puppy with everything it takes to make a great companion. She loves her people, so comes every time she is called, is friendly with other dogs on the beach and the trails and doesn’t seem to be bothered by people and dogs cruising by her space. Cass’s basic obedience needs some work, as she is a young pup, but she wants to please and learns very quickly. Cass walks without pulling with occasional reminders of who is boss at the other end of the leash and is learning her manners in the house. “Counter surfing” is her big challenge right now, but her foster Mom has been working on that with her. Cass is crate trained and house trained . This little cutie will be a terrific pet for someone who is willing to put the work into establishing themselves as her leader through a commitment to obedience lessons. Cassie’s adoption fee includes spaying and a full session of group lessons with Geoff Cooke of Last Chance Dog Services. Cassie is a Last Chance Dog.

Koma

Koma is a 6 year old chihuahua.  She is a calm dog for the most part, but has a spark of energy in her .. she's a hoot to watch and can be very playful.  She gets along well with all other pets, including cats.  Koma loves nothing more than to sleep on the bed with you.  She is very affectionate and likes to be close to her favourite person.  She was rescued from a hoarding situation and faced euthanasia.

Because of her previous environment Koma will need some help with appropriate potty training.  With consistent reinforcement and patience the problem should resolve.

If you think you can give this little cutie a forever home, please fill out an application (click on the yellow bar below which will take you to the website with application) and send along.  Koma is a DogBless Rescue dog.

Ella
Husky Shepherd
1yr / 70lbs

It is too bad that Ella does not belong to one particular breed. If she did, she would be the cover girl of any magazine honoring them. Ella is a curious, playful, and affectionate sweetheart as described by her owner, and I could not agree more. The Husky in her loves to talk, and the Sheppard displays unwavering loyalty. However, Ella is shy, and needs to be socialized with both people and dogs. With sadness, Ella's owner feels she must be re homed as she knows that Ella will be much happier living without her cat, and her two Boston Bulls.

I worked with Ella for one hour and found that she learns quickly and obeys commands. As with any dog who exhibits trepidation, she must be handled with kind leadership. Easy yet constant exposure to that which she fears is imperative if she is to conquer those fears. Anyone who feels sorry for her will only do her a disservice. Ella needs a human friend and companion who will encourage her to jump into life, and regard people and fellow canines as pals. Ella is a Last Chance Dog Service dog.

Sarah

Sarah is a young, biddable dog who came into a Lower Mainland shelter as a stray. She has a moderate case of demodetic mange. She will be spening time in foster care healing up, and soon will be sporting a shiny coat. This lucky girl is now living with a dog trainer so she will also have a nice set of manners to go with her soon to be new-and-improved look.

Sarah has a laid-back Mastiff temperament in a slightly smaller package (about 70 lbs). Her foster mom believes her to be a Mastiff x Lab. Sarah is about 1 1/2 years old and just learning about the world. It is obvious that in her old home she never got much outside of the yard. She is learning all about living in the house, what a crate is all about, and how to walk nicely on leash. Sarah is really good with other dogs as well as cat, and would do well living with other animals.

Stay tuned on updates about Sarah. She will be available shortly to go into a foster-to-adopt home where Bully Buddies will continue to cover her skin care needs. Sarah is a Bully Buddies Rescue dog.

Niki

Niki came into rescue because her owner died and she has nowhere to go.   She's a great little dog, purebred, spayed, 8 years old.

Niki is quiet, totally housetrained, good with other dogs and great with people.  She's the type of dog that could accompany their human at work.

Niki is not hyper but loves to chase balls in the yard. On leash needs a little work because she has been an apartment dweller. Please Contact Bev @ Second Chances Rescue,

Maggie

Maggie is a 2 year old Miniature Dachshund who is in good health. She LOVES to be with her person and she would prefer a home where someone has lots of time to spend with her. She doesn't like to be left behind, but is fine when she is. She travels well in the car and enjoys being with you, wherever you are. If she is in the room with you, she wants to be on your lap. She is a face-licker, very affectionate, and a constant companion. She gives a lot of love and needs a lot of love back. She likes to be babied and mothered, even by other dogs.

Maggie is sensitive to the cold and she loves to cuddle inside your clothes (while you're wearing them!) and will fight to sleep in the bed...under the covers. She likes comfort and warmth and enjoys soft blankets and big, billowy pillows.

Maggie is a creature of habit and easily settles into a routine. Once she has figured out the household routine, she will let you know if you aren't following it! She looks forward to the next 'event' and will tell you if you forget. She gets excited about going out, treats, and especially bedtime. She loves bedtime so much that she goes to bed early and sleeps in late!

Maggie gets along well with other dogs. She is not crazy about cats, but will tolerate them. She has no trouble jumping on couches or beds. She is not naughty or mischievous and, aside from being a bit 'needy' and wanting lots of attention and affection, she doesn't really have any bad habits.

Maggie is spayed, micro-chipped, tattooed and up to date with her vaccinations. She has recently had her teeth buffed and polished. She is being fostered in Duncan, on Vancouver Island. If you have specific questions about Maggie or you would like to request an adoption application, please use Adoption Information link below.

Curly

Though he looks like a Rotti, handsome Curly comes from Airedale/Shepherd lineage!! He is a very large boy, approximately 6 months old, and quite energetic. What he lacks in basic obedience, he makes up with his general affection for people and eagerness to learn new things. Sadly, the first part of Curly's life was spent on a chain so he would require a patient family willing to show him what freedom and boundaries mean. As he is large and quite gregarious, he would be best suited to a family with no small children. Curly also likes to chase cats, so a cat-free home is a must.Click on "Adoption Information" below for contact information. Curly is a Cowichan SPCA dog.

Raven
Assessment and bio done by Steve Huxter of Transform - Animal Behaviour Solutions.

Such a beautiful dog! Raven carries all the regal bearing of his breed, the Standard Poodle. He has a very calm and gentle temperament and loves his walks, and runs at the park. Watching Raven when he runs is pure pleasure.

At ten years of age and despite the fact that he has the energy and playfulness of an adolescent at times; Raven is facing mandatory retirement as an assistance dog. Raven’s companion has no choice but to find a new home for Raven so that the new canine companion can come into the home.

Raven would best suit placement in a home where he will be in the company of his companion as much as possible. He will need his daily walks and an opportunity to have a good run at the park. Raven gets along well with other dogs once he becomes familiar with them. However, he does react excitedly to other dogs when he is out for a walk or if he sees another dog when playing off leash at the park. Raven needs a cat-free home.

Other than his excited reactions to other dogs, Raven has a charming temperament and personality. You can’t help being attracted to him. It is seldom I meet a dog that has been so well cared for as Raven. Aside from some specific dietary needs that must be followed, he is in great health and would make the perfect companion for someone willing to care for Raven and accept his unconditional love in return.
Please Note: We are now accepting applications for Raven, but he will not be ready for placement until mid-February. Click on Adoption Information below for email contact. Raven is a Victoria Adoptables dog.

chiko
Assessment and bio done by Steve Huxter of Transform - Animal Behaviour Solutions.

I very much enjoyed the time I spent with Chiko during my assessment. Chiko is a wonderfully energetic dog who is very willing to please and gets along well with other dogs. He would perfectly suit a busy lifestyle as he seems to have boundless energy. Chiko would benefit from some training and would need some guidance to be a better walker on leash. To his credit Chiko is an eager learner and should pick up his training well. He would greatly suit some introductory “agility” training.

Chiko has led a fairly unstructured lifestyle until he came to his current foster home. I would suggest that whoever brings Chiko into their home and life will find him to be a loving and attentive companion and that he needs to be engaged and kept active. I suspect Chiko will be somewhat “clingy” for the first few weeks in his new home and will want to be with his new “family/pack” as much as he can.

I am certain this will dissipate as he relaxes and acclimates to his new home.

If you are interested in Chiko, be prepared to include him in your active outdoor lifestyle. Chiko will love his long walks and hikes. He also gets along well with the other dogs at his foster home so he would likely make a good addition to your existing dog family. He is purported to be shy toward some men but I found he was eager to interact with me and displayed none of his shyness.

Chiko is a “keeper” for certain! Click on Adoption Information below for contact email address. Chiko is a Nana Foundation dog.

dominique

Dominique spent her entire year of life chained under a porch, suffering from generalized demodex mange and not receiving the proper nutrition that a young puppy requires.

This little girl is approximately 40 pounds and will be spayed this Monday. Currently she is on a one month course of antibiotics to clear up her secondary skin infections, high quality food and soon supplements will be added to her diet.

She is a timid little girl, fearful of sounds.  She tries to curl into a small tiny ball so she can keep herself safe from harm.  Dominique takes food very gently from her loving foster Mom's hand, she only wishes to be loved and to have humans understand that she doesn't know what kindness is.

Note: We adopt within a two hour drive of the lower mainland and Vancouver/Gulf Islands only Dominique is a Big Heart Rescue dog.

Sidney

Sidney is a very sweet 5yo, spayed female boxer. She is on the smaller side at 50 pounds, 18" at the shoulders and her nose isn't as short as most, but she is all boxer. She is a sensitive girl that would do better in a home with older childern that can respect her space. She would love to join in all the activites but when it gets too rambuctious, she gets nervous. She currently lives with an older male dog, hasn't lived with a cat but could probably be easily trained to leave the cat alone. She has suffered from a yeast infection in her ears and on her feet. We feel it is allergy and stress related and her current diet change has shown some improvement. Hernew family will need to continue to monitor this and be willing to provide an appropriate diet for her. Sidney is update on all her vaccinations.

Bear - Updated Bio for Bear - Updated

Male (N) (Lab/Shepherd/Heeler X) Age 7 years Weight 75 lbs. (Ideal weight 60lbs.)

Bear’s owner was an older gentlemen who passed away just before Christmas. Bear was lost for awhile without him, but has settled very well into his foster home with 2 other big dogs and is enjoying his daily trail runs.

Bear is overweight, but slimming down nicely. He keeps up with the pack on the trails, is friendly and easy to manage, both on and off leash and his energy is picking up as he sheds his pounds.

Bear loves to swim and will fetch a stick for as long as you will play with him. He has good house manners and can be left alone. Bear’s obedience is good – he will sit, down and stay in his bed in the kitchen when asked.

We would like to see Bear go to someone with no other dogs – he can be a bit testy around his food with our other dogs – (but that may due to his new reduced diet). He is good with cats and children and would be great for a first time dog owner – he is very affectionate, with a big warm smile. To get back into shape, Bear needs someone who will walk him daily, preferably with a few off leash runs every week.

Bear’s adoption fee includes 3 obedience lessons. Bear is a Last Chance Rehoming Service dog.

Hobbs

Poor Hobbs was surrendered to us due to his owner's failing health.  He is a big rottweiller boy that was adopted  a couple of years ago from us after he came from an extremely neglectful past.  He was so lucky to have been shown love, understanding & acceptence during these past couple of years.

Hobbs is such a loving, snuggly guy that doesn't always realize how big & strong he actually is.  In his former home he was tought to jump up for hugs...fine if you are over 6ft & strong like an ox but for the average person it's too much.  He also leans on you for cuddles and will use his entire body weight...once again, fine if you are an ox.  Anyway, we are in the process of teaching him that jumping up and leaning with all that you have is not necessary to get love.  When reminded of this he will quickly sit and try with all his might to refrain himself...what a good guy!  He likes to fetch toys & bounce around like a puppy with them in his mouth.  If you are looking for a mature, tough looking, big BABY and you don't own any cats... then Hobbs is your man.  Click on "Adopt Information" below for contact information. Hobbes is a Nana Foundation dog.

Penny
Breed: Saluki/Greyhound/Husky
Age: 8-10 months

How I would best describe Penny is she's happy go lucky, strong, loving, energetic and loyal. Penny is an amazing dog to have come from awful conditions. Penny is one of 56 dogs that were on a Northern BC property when it was seized by the sheriff. Turtle Garden's rescue was asked to step in and help these dogs. Two of the dogs made their way south to the Lower Mainland to be in our care, Penny being one of them.

She's got a great appetite and loves her food. Prior to coming into our care, Ayla had been neglected and had likely missed many meals. She was quite underweight and was very protective of her food. Her protectiveness of food has improved a lot now that she knows the meals will keep coming.

Ayla is spayed, micro-chipped, tattooed and up to date with her vaccinations. She has recently had her teeth buffed and polished. She is being fostered in Halfmoon Bay, on the Sunshine Coast. Click on "Adopt Information" below for contact information. Ayla is a Furever After Rescue dog.

Tuffy

Picture Coming Soon!

Tuffy is a three-year-old neutered male black and white Shih Tzu mix. He is a happy-go-lucky dog who loves everyone and everything. He has lots of energy and needs several good walks per day to keep him happy and healthy. He loves to play with other dogs and would prefer a home with a friendly canine playmate.

Tuffy is deaf and was likely born that way, so he has adapted very well and he is always looking to his person for direction. However, certain precautions will need to be taken in order to keep him safe. A securely fenced yard would be preferred and Tuffy will need to be walked on-leash unless he's in an enclosed area. Interactions with new dogs will need to be supervised, as Tuffy can't hear "warning" growls and he tries to play with every dog he meets. A family that is interested in pursuing hand signal training would be preferred.

Tuffy is neutered, tattooed, up-to-date with his vaccinations and has recently had some dental care completed. He will also be microchipped prior to adoption.Click on "Adopt Information" below for contact information. Tuffy is a Furever After Rescue dog.

Kira and Lana

Kira and Lana: were dumped off by their owner on her way out of town at the home of a known local animal rescuer. They seemed to have been well cared for and are very attached to one another. They need very active homes, especially Lana. Lana seems to be a golden lab and Kira a black lab cross. They are both beautiful, sweet and affectionate dogs that need lots of love, exercise and a bit of training. Lana is the goofy playful one and Kira is more submissive. They are both about 2 years old. Kira goes wherever Lana goes. It would be ideal if they could be adopted together but we are not opposed to placing them separately. Both are spayed, vaccinated and de-wormed.
